Hello DLHA Parents and Families,
My name is Mr. Vanden Busch, and I will be the Middle School English teacher at DLH for the 2017-2018 school year. I began my work here at DLH this past February and will be working through the full school year this time around. I have almost five years of experience in education, most of that time as a sign language interpreter in the Milwaukee, Madison, and Chicago areas. I’m currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in education from Alverno College.
This year, we will be focusing a lot of our efforts on the writing process and using novels and short stories as guides and mentor texts to help us in creating quality writing and celebrating our work by publishing our pieces for our classmates and school community. We will focus on writing narratives, arguments, informational essays and literary criticisms. I also plan to incorporate technology into the classroom when conducting research and typing our written pieces. Writing is a practiced skill and just like playing basketball, running track, or playing an instrument, writing drills and skill practice is important! We will organize our notebooks to make sure that we can find and document our work properly as well. THERE WAS A MISTAKE ON THE MIDDLE SCHOOL SUPPLY LIST FOR ENGLISH!! AS WELL AS HAVING TWO SINGLE SUBJECT NOTEBOOKS, PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD BRINGS A THREE-SUBJECT NOTEBOOK WITH THEM TO THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS. THAT MAKES A TOTAL OF THREE NOTEBOOKS STUDENTS WILL NEED FOR CLASS. We apologize for the supply oversight.
We will also have a heavy focus on reading. Students are expected to bring home AR books and/or the current classroom novel of focus and read for about forty-five minutes each night during the school year. We will track this reading throughout the year.
Being in class ON TIME and READY is important for students to meet learning goals. Frequent absences or tardiness could result in regularly missing out on entire blocks of instruction reflects on a student's ability to be successful. Learning gaps in English Language Arts make it very difficult for students to complete high school. Attendance is important and showing up to school on time consistently will make each student more successful during the school year and beyond.
If you need to contact me with any questions or concerns, you can call the school at 414-358-3542 but I can best be reached by email at firstname.lastname@example.org. I look forward to working with your children in class. Enjoy the rest of your summer; see you in a few weeks!
All the Best,
Mr. Vanden Busch
