I am writing this letter with much excitement and anticipation about the 2017-2018 school year!  I hope that you can feel my excitement as you read it.  First off, I am Mrs. Mickel (pronounced Micheal) and I will be the fifth grade teacher this year.  Some of you may know me as Ms. Nichols. I am still getting used to the transition so forgive me if I still refer to myself as Ms. Nichols.  I will try my best to pick one name.

I am a fully licensed and certified elementary school teacher. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management with a minor in Adult Education.  I earned my Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Alverno College.  My Master’s is in Urban Education with an emphasis in Language Arts.

I have to say that I am so glad to be back at DLHA.  I left for a year and I am truly convinced this is one of Milwaukee’s hidden gems.  It is a great place for students and teachers!  Being at DLHA is being amongst family and every adult in this building cares about our children.  It feels so good to be home.  I truly believe in the mission and vision of our school to create lifelong learners.

I would like to have a laser sharp focus on writing this year.  I believe that strong writers can become strong readers.  A lot of the strategies that can be used to help children become better readers, can also help them become better writers.  In addition to the writing portion, you will see more work with grammar and spelling.  Strengthening spelling and grammar will definitely develop writing skills.

As readers, we will work on building vocabulary and comprehension strategies.  Reading instruction will take place throughout the day, even during our PYP time.  Remember, exhibition is this year so parental involvement is key to make this year successful.  My classroom is ALWAYS open to family.  We are a team and must work together to ensure success for all students.
