About DLHA

The Darrell Lynn Hines College Preparatory Academy of  Excellence

When DLH Academy originally opened, we were honored to have at the helm of our school the late Dr. Barbara P. Horton, Executive Director, who added insight and leverage to our years of success.  In 2002, we were awarded charter school status by the City of Milwaukee Charter Review Committee.  This status afforded us the opportunity to offer a free public school education to all students who reside in the City of Milwaukee.

In 2004 we received the prestigious International Baccalaureate (IB) accreditation which enhanced our ability to prepare our students to successfully meet the challenges they face in today’s ever changing world.  The IB framework offers students a rich, diverse educational program.  Through this framework, along with Balanced Literacy, Everyday Math and other rich curricula, students are equipped to expand their personal horizons while positioning themselves to transform the world.  DLH Academy students feel valued and are taught to value diversity and embrace multiculturalism. In 2007, we were fortunate to develop a wonderful partnership with  the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music to offer a rich music program.

DLH Academy fosters strong parental involvement in order to create a stable relationship between teachers, parents and students.  Parents are encouraged to be actively involved in their children’s education. We diligently strive to make our school “parent friendly” with a strong parent-school partnership that provides a good support system for students.

Since our school began operating, we have experienced steady growth in enrollment.  We have grown from 109 to approximately 300 students.  The staff are highly qualified, skilled and caring individuals who take full responsibility for students’ learning and well being.

The Darrell Lynn Hines College Preparatory Academy of Excellence endeavors through dedication and hard work to continue to prepare children to successfully meet the economic and social challenges of today’s world.
